What is a Damos file?
A Damos file — also called an ECU definition file or an A2L file — is a dictionary describing the contents of an engine control unit. It is what connects the raw data in an ECU file to what that data actually means.
In practice: when you read an ECU out with a Kess V3 or an Autotuner, what you get back is one large block of binary data. Thousands of bytes representing injection, ignition and boost maps — with no labels on any of it. You can see the data, but you have no idea what each value controls.
The Damos file holds everything needed to "read" that data: the map names, their memory addresses, the units, the X and Y axes, the conversion factors. It is what turns an incomprehensible block of numbers into maps you can edit in WinOLS.
The different Damos formats
Several formats exist, depending on the ECU, the manufacturer and the software. Here they are, from the most common to the rarest:

Why remapping cannot do without them
Without a Damos file, remapping an ECU in WinOLS is like fixing a car with no wiring diagram. Technically possible for someone with years of experience — but for most people it is out of reach, and risky.
With a Damos, you can:
- Identify the key maps instantly: injection, ignition, boost, rev limiter, speed limiter
- Work with meaningful names rather than hexadecimal addresses
- Understand the units — knowing whether you are editing injection milliseconds or degrees of advance
- Save an enormous amount of time — what would take hours to identify by hand happens in seconds
- Avoid mistakes — editing the wrong map can kill an engine
How to load a Damos into WinOLS
The basic procedure is simple, once you have your ECU read and the matching Damos file:
- Open WinOLS and load your ECU file (File → Open)
- In the open project, go to Project → Import Damos / Import A2L
- Select the .a2l or .damos file that matches your ECU
- WinOLS maps everything automatically — the maps appear by name in the data tree
- You can now browse, view and edit every identified map
Where to find Damos files
This is usually where people get stuck. Official Damos files come from the OEM or the suppliers (Bosch, Continental, Siemens…) and are not freely distributed. There are several routes:
- Manufacturers and suppliers — access is reserved for official partners, costs a great deal and comes with strict licence agreements
- Specialist providers — such as Dacodac Performance, offering packs with thousands of native A2L Damos files
- Remapping communities — files traded between professionals, though quality and coverage vary
- Tool subscriptions — some flashing tools include basic Damos files with the subscription

A2L Damos vs an unidentified file — the real difference
A native A2L Damos contains everything WinOLS needs to identify the maps on its own. There is one important distinction to be aware of:
- Native A2L Damos — the complete file from the supplier, holding 100% of the information. Full automatic identification in WinOLS.
- Partial or community Damos — a file rebuilt by hand by tuners. Covers the main maps, but can be incomplete.
- No Damos at all — you identify the maps by hand through hex analysis. For experts only.
In short
Damos files are the keystone of remapping in WinOLS. Without them you are working blind inside an incomprehensible binary. With them, every map is identified, named and editable in a few clicks.
If you regularly work on different ECUs, a solid Damos library covering every make is not a luxury — it is what lets you work efficiently and safely.
