What is Vmax Off?

Vmax Off (or speed derestriction) is the software removal of the electronic speed limiter manufacturers build into the ECU. Most European makers — German ones in particular — cap their cars at 250 km/h as standard, even when the engine and gearbox could go further.

The limiter is not mechanical, it is purely software: once the set speed is reached, the ECU cuts injection to stop the car going any faster. Vmax Off simply removes that cut.

Why do manufacturers cap cars at 250 km/h?

It is the result of an agreement between the German manufacturers (BMW, Mercedes, Audi/VW/Porsche) signed in the 1980s. This voluntary agreement caps cars at 250 km/h on public safety grounds — the standard tyres of the day were not built for more.

Tyres have moved on considerably, but the agreement still holds. Some high-performance models sit elsewhere: AMGs at 290 km/h, "Edition 1" versions with no limit at all, BMW M cars at 250 or 280 depending on the version.

Worth noting: the 250 km/h figure is not universal. On diesels and city cars the limit is often lower, 180 to 220 km/h. On supercars there may be none at all.

How does Vmax Off work?

The ECU map holds one or more tables defining the maximum permitted speed. When the sensors read that value, the ECU applies a limiting strategy — usually cutting injection partially or completely.

Vmax Off changes those tables to:

  • Raising the limit to something very high, say 350 km/h, or removing it altogether
  • Neutralising the cut-off strategy of injection at high speed
  • On some ECUs, correcting the other parameters too tied to speed (gearbox management, ABS, ESP at high speed)

What a Vmax Off needs to be worthwhile

Removing the software limiter is only the first step. For the car to actually exceed its original limit you also need:

  • The right tyres — the speed rating has to match. An H-rated tyre (210 km/h) must not be run at 250+. Minimum V (240), W (270) or Y (300) depending on use.
  • A car in excellent condition — suspension, brakes, tyres. At those speeds the smallest failure is catastrophic.
  • A closed circuit — Vmax Off makes sense on a German autobahn, where derestricted stretches are legal, or on track. In France the motorway limit is 130 km/h.

Legality: Vmax Off is not illegal in itself — using the speed on public roads may be, depending on the country. On derestricted stretches of German autobahn it is perfectly legal. In France, the posted limits still apply.

Which vehicles can take a Vmax Off?

Almost any vehicle with a remappable ECU can take a Vmax Off. The most common:

  • Golf GTI, Golf R, Golf GTE — frequently requested, straightforward result
  • BMW 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Series and M — the software limiter is well identified
  • Audi A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, RS — same VW platform, very well supported
  • Mercedes A, C, E-Class and AMG — supported depending on the ECU
  • Porsche 911, Cayenne, Macan — PDK and ECU are well documented
